Step 1: 3D modeling
The first step is to create a toy that I like. For that I use Blender, an open source 3D software which allows me to design and sculpt a shape that I like. With a little bit of time and patience anything is possible!
Step 2: Printing and preparing the 3D model
Once the model is made, it is directly send to my 3D printer, using the lower print thickness (for my 0.12mm printer). However the print will be molded in silicone which really marks all the smallest details! So it is important for me to smooth the print before making a mold out of it.
To make the mold, create or find a container that can hold the model laid flat on the bottom. Legoes are a good option for making adjustable molds and Reusable Once the container is created, lay the model flat on the bottom and carefully pour the silicone in the container after mixing it well. An inexpensive alternative to silicone to perform tests is alginate, which is the paste used by the dentist to make tooth casts! However, will be single-use. Once the mold is dry, you just have to take out the 3D model and tada!
The choice of silicone is important because it must be non-porous! If the silicone is porous, bacteria will proliferate in the micro holes and your toy will become impossible to clean. Platinium silicones are therefore required. The ones I use are also certified 'Skin-safe '.
For the coloring a small amount of natural mica powder is directly added to the silicone. The powders used are cosmetic quality, they do not contain nanoparticles and they comply with European regulations.
It is known that they are a lot of ethical problems with mica powders in particular with the exploitation of children, animals and people. I would not participate in any way to encourage these practices. The mica powders that I use come mainly from Europe and some from the United States. They are ethically guaranteed with zero tolerance for the exploitation of children, animals or people and have not been tested on animals. The toys made are therefore vegan! :)
Degassing silicone is a necessary step especially when using more viscous silicones (often those with a higher final hardness). After mixing it a lot of air is introduced in. This air, if not removed, can end up in the form of bubbles and therefore cause holes in the toy (which makes it porous!). The silicone is therefore left 2-3 min in a vacuum chamber to ensure all the air is removed from it.
Just before pouring, it is important to coat the mold with Vaseline. If it's not the case, the silicone of the mold and that of the toy will bond and you will not be able to unmold your toy! It would be silly to have come this far for this result.
Finally, this is my favorite, most exciting moment: the silicone pouring! Depending on the order, the proportions of the colors, the pouring speed, the color obtained will be different! This process being very random will make each toy unique !
Step 7: Unmolding, finish and washing
After waiting between 4-5 hours, the toy is ready to be taken out of the mold (and yes the mold is monopolized for that long!). The toy is carefully removed and the edge of the base are cut with scissors for a clean finish! The mold and the toy are washed with a mild soap and your toy is ready to be sent to you! :)
